| Background Information | TrpC3, also known as Short transient receptor potential channel 3, transient receptor protein 3 or TRP-3, and encoded by the gene TRPC3/TRP3, forms a receptor activated calcium channel that is activated via ligand binding and transduces signals via the G-protein coupled tyrosine receptor kinases pathways.TrpC3 can also be activated by the release of internal calcium and is one of the principal receptors involved in maintaining Ca++ ion homeostasis in skeletal muscles and nervous tissue. TrpC3 is also a principal receptor involved in the Capacitative calcium entry (CCE) which is the mechanism behind Ca++ influx into cells that replenishes internal calcium stores. Additionally, TrpC3 receptor is important in axon guidance, phototransduction, and platelet activation. TrpC3 is localized to the cell membrane and consists of a multipass-though transport protein. TrpC3 is expressed principally in the brain but is also found in most other tissues and organs at lowered levels. |
